To answer my own question a bit: - animation also seems possible using sprites, as sprites can have a new position and a new opacity each frame (reusing a single image). don't know about performance limitations though. - about being in the dark about the Synergy architecture, I just discovered this file on my disk (where Google can't find it) which seems to contain a wealth of background info: "C:\Renesas\Synergy\SSP_Documentation\ssp-user-manual-html-v0.94-sspv1.1.0.zip\ssp-user-manual-html-v0.94-sspv1.1.0\ssp-user-manual-html-v0.94-sspv1.1.0.html".
