I found it when I switched to release mode, in which I remove the call to initialize_monitor_handles, the call to printf, and change the linker option to nosys.specs. To debug, I have tried it both way, but nothing changes anything. All I have to do is comment out the printf and the socket closes. It is definitely tied to the printf being there or not. Now, an interesting test might be to remove that printf but put one somewhere else and see what happens. It is the only printf in the project, although there are other sprintfs and vsprintfs. It sure smells like a stack/heap thing, but one that printf makes WORK, not fail.
